How to save Google Gemini chat history

Saving your Google Gemini chat history isn't as straightforward as it should be — Google doesn't provide a one-click bulk export, and the default retention period means your conversations will eventually be deleted. Here's every way to save Gemini chats.

How Gemini handles your history by default

  • When you use Gemini with your Google account, conversations are saved to Gemini Apps Activity and retained for 18 months by default, then automatically deleted. If you turn off Gemini Apps Activity, conversations are only saved for 72 hours.

Built-in save options

  • Keep Gemini Apps Activity on: Settings → Activity — toggle on and set auto-delete to 'Keep until I delete manually'.
  • Google My Activity: myactivity.google.com → filter by Gemini Apps. Browse and search your conversation history.
  • Manual copy to document: select conversation text and paste into Google Docs or Notion.
  • Print to PDF: Ctrl/Cmd+P → Save as PDF for individual conversations.

One-click summaries with thredly

  • Even with Gemini Apps Activity on, Google deletes your history after 18 months at most. For Gemini, paste the conversation into the thredly web app and click Summarize: you get a structured summary stored privately to your account, yours to keep beyond Google's window. (thredly's in-page Summarize button is on ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek; Gemini and Perplexity are supported via the web app.)

Frequently asked questions

Can I download all my Gemini conversations at once?

Not with a built-in feature. Google doesn't currently offer a bulk Gemini conversation export. You can access history through My Activity or use thredly for ongoing automatic capture.

What happens to my Gemini history if I delete my Google account?

It's deleted with the account. If you're considering closing a Google account, export any important Gemini conversations first.
