ChatGPT lost my conversation — what happened and how to recover it

If ChatGPT lost your conversation — it's gone from your history, a session disappeared, or you closed a tab and came back to nothing — this guide explains the different scenarios, what can be recovered, and what to do next time.

The different ways ChatGPT loses a conversation

  • Disappeared from sidebar: most likely deleted (permanent) or you're logged into a different account.
  • Closed browser tab: most likely chat history was off in settings, or you were in incognito mode.
  • Refreshed mid-conversation: connection issue or session not yet committed — try the back button immediately.
  • Context seeming to reset in an active session: not a lost conversation but context drift — see the guide on ChatGPT losing context.

Can you recover a deleted ChatGPT conversation?

  • In most cases: no. OpenAI doesn't maintain a recycle bin. Your best chance is a recent data export (Settings → Data Controls → Export), a previously shared link that still works, or content you copied to another document.

How to never lose one again

  • Keep chat history enabled, do periodic data exports, and use thredly for automatic real-time capture. thredly saves a summary of every session independently of ChatGPT's own system — so even if a conversation disappears from the sidebar, your record of what happened is still in thredly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I contact OpenAI to recover a deleted conversation?

OpenAI support doesn't offer individual conversation recovery. User-deleted content is removed and not retrievable by support.

What if my conversation disappeared but I didn't delete it?

Check you're logged into the right account. Also check archived conversations — ChatGPT lets you archive conversations, which hides them but doesn't delete them. Look for an Archived section in the sidebar.
