How to export Character AI chats and preserve what matters
For a meaningful Character AI chat, keep two things: a raw copy you control and a concise summary that can start a fresh scene without replaying the whole transcript.
Preservation is different from a character definition
A character definition describes the character's baseline. It does not automatically capture the events, decisions, and relationship development created in one chat.
Character.AI documents an account-data export. This is different from a character definition or a ready-to-import continuity summary. Keep the archive private and extract only the conversation text you intend to use.
Signs it is time to make a continuity note
- You are about to restart a roleplay or move to a new character version.
- The conversation contains an important relationship change, reveal, promise, or branch.
- You want an independent copy instead of depending on one platform view.
A practical Character AI preservation workflow
Start with Character.AI's export instructions, checked 13 October 2026. On the web, open Profile, then Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, and Export data. In the mobile app, open Profile, its settings icon, then Export my data. The help page does not establish a per-chat selector, delivery time, export format or complete-chat import into another service. If the needed text is unavailable in the archive, copy the accessible section manually.
Give thredly the section that establishes the current story state, not unrelated scrolling history.
Keep the resulting summary with the raw copy and paste it at the top of the fresh conversation when continuity matters.

What a useful handover should retain
- Character identity, personality, voice, and any user persona details that still matter.

- A short instruction for the next session that states where the conversation should resume.
